Traveling Workshop for Writers and Writing Organizations

Beyond Traditional Publishing: Uncovering Private Contract Opportunities

About the Program:

This is a program for writers who want to write outside the traditional book box and the writing organizations that support them and encourage them.

Each program is customized for the audience attending the program.

The workshop may include, but is not limited to:

1. The definition of a private contract.

2. An overview/history of the presenter’s two book projects for a private, residential school, using photos to show the research, writing, and publication process.

3. A hands-on activity to help each participant weave his own web of opportunity using personal interests, geographical area, and writing niche, to determine organizations and associations that may have an interest in or need to work with a private writer.

4. An explanation of the entrepreneurial approach to researching these opportunities and writing a special form of query letter to attract the organization’s interest.

5. A second web of opportunity to uncover tag-along contracts for school and library programs, community events, special book signings, meet the author programs, and more.

6. Question and answer period with the author/entrepreneur.

About the Presenter:

Carol Parenzan Smalley is the published author of more than 20 children’s books, several quick guides for adults, a former managing editor of business web sites and publications, an entrepreneur, an educator, and a member of numerous writing and art associations and organizations.

Her writing focus is creative nonfiction, and she works primarily with the educational publishing market.

During 2008, Milton Hershey School commissioned her to write two children’s books to help the private school, founded by chocolatier Milton S. Hershey, celebrate its 100th anniversary.

As a college instructor, she developed and facilitates two online courses through a consortium of over 2,200 colleges and universities around the world. The first course is an overview of the children’s publishing industry. It is called Writing for Children, and includes interviews with Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) founders and writers.

The second course focuses on entrepreneurship and marketing. Its title is Creating a Successful Business Plan. Many of her writing students become entrepreneurial students as they approach their writing as a business and with entrepreneurial spirit.

Additionally, she teaches in the classroom, where she conducts specialized programs on creative thinking, problem solving, time management, and enhancing the customer experience.

She is a school and library program developer and presenter through the New York State Performers and Programs network.

As part of this traveling workshop, she is also available to do programs on creating school and library programs, writing creative nonfiction, examining first pages, repurposing previous work, and conducting individual critique sessions.
